Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign.
[00:00:09] Speaker B: Welcome to PS 202 News. My name is Mrs. Brown and I'm here with the students of PS 202 News, the podcast club Daniella, America, Nya, Lee, Nathan, and Ion. And I am only hosting this episode because we're talking about something that can be very sensitive.
For some, this is a time that they celebrate with their friends and their family. And for others it's not. It's where maybe they are celebrating something else or not celebrating Christmas at all. So I want to talk to the students about Christmas, about what it means, why they celebrate it, why they don't celebrate it. But first we're going to open it up with a game. Okay, so we're going to open it up with. Wait, wait, what am I?
[00:00:53] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:00:54] Speaker B: And this game is where the students are going to guess what I am. Person, creature or object. And the category is Christmas.
All right, so every single person gets five guesses each. After their five guesses, they must guess what the person, object or creature is.
If they want to guess before the their five choices are up, they have to say what?
[00:01:23] Speaker C: Nylee.
[00:01:24] Speaker D: Wait, wait. I know.
[00:01:26] Speaker C: Very good.
[00:01:26] Speaker B: Wait, wait.
[00:01:27] Speaker C: I know.
[00:01:28] Speaker B: And if they get it wrong, then what happens to them? Ion?
[00:01:32] Speaker A: They out.
[00:01:33] Speaker B: They out. But if they get it right, then what happens? They get to host the next episode.
[00:01:38] Speaker C: Cuz they won.
[00:01:39] Speaker B: Okay, so here we go, you guys. So wait, wait, what am I? I have a person, creature or object in mind. Again, the category is Christmas. Who wants to go first?
Daniella, Is the.
[00:01:56] Speaker E: Is it a person?
[00:01:58] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:01:59] Speaker D: Is it.
Does it have big ears?
[00:02:05] Speaker C: No.
[00:02:07] Speaker B: Who next? Okay, America.
[00:02:12] Speaker F: Does it have pointy ears?
[00:02:15] Speaker C: No.
[00:02:15] Speaker B: Pointy ears. Who next? Nathan. Wait, wait.
[00:02:18] Speaker G: I know.
[00:02:19] Speaker B: So before you guess, here are the clues so far. It's a person. He doesn't have any big ears. And he doesn't have pointy ears. You just gave us a number, so.
[00:02:30] Speaker G: You just give us.
[00:02:31] Speaker B: Oh, I did. You're right. What was the other hint I gave you? It's a he, Nathan. You're good, sir. You're good. So Nathan said. Wait, wait, I know. So let's hear your guess, Nathan.
[00:02:41] Speaker G: Is it Santa Claus?
[00:02:45] Speaker B: No, it is not Santa Claus. All right, who wants to ask a question?
All right, Daniella.
[00:02:54] Speaker E: Does it have a big red nose?
[00:02:59] Speaker C: No.
[00:03:00] Speaker B: Big red nose.
[00:03:04] Speaker G: I knew you were thinking of Rudolph the Red nose reindeer.
[00:03:08] Speaker B: So I'm gonna run the clues again. It's a person. No big ears. No pointy ears. It's not Santa Claus.
No big red nose.
And it's a he. And I'm sorry to Say, Nathan, you're out. I didn't say that for this part. Yeah, you are. It's okay. But you guessed. That's good. Okay, Ion, what's your. What's your question?
[00:03:31] Speaker A: Is it like a gnome?
[00:03:33] Speaker B: Is that your weight? Wait, I know. Or.
No, it's not a gnome.
[00:03:38] Speaker E: Does it have.
[00:03:41] Speaker D: Clothes?
[00:03:45] Speaker B: Yes, this person has clothes. Keep in mind the category is Christmas, right? So think about what Christmas is. Is about. It's supposed to be about. Okay, so the clues again are. Are. It's a person. It's a he. It does. He doesn't have any big ears. He doesn't have any pointy ears. It's not a Santa Claus. There's no big red nose. It's not a gnome, and he has clothes. Anybody else have any questions?
Wow. No guesses. Okay, do you want me to tell you who it is?
No. Well, then do you want to guess?
[00:04:32] Speaker A: Is it the animal?
[00:04:33] Speaker B: It's not an anim.
[00:04:35] Speaker A: Please, please tell us.
[00:04:36] Speaker H: Please.
[00:04:37] Speaker A: Okay, please, please, please, please tell us.
[00:04:41] Speaker B: Okay, so the clues. For the last time, Nilee, can you read off the clues for me?
[00:04:46] Speaker D: Yes. It's a person. It has no big ears. No pointy ears. Not Santa. Doesn't have a red nose. It does have clothes. Not a animal.
[00:04:59] Speaker B: So here's the big reveal. Okay?
We said it's a person, right?
[00:05:04] Speaker H: So.
[00:05:04] Speaker B: So all these different clues, it's Jesus. Duh.
What?
Duh? Isn't that the reason why you celebrate Christmas? So let's get into the conversation. Okay.
[00:05:17] Speaker G: Because of Jesus, though.
[00:05:20] Speaker B: So of all the things, I gave you guys, so many clues and nobody said Jesus. Why did nobody say Jesus?
[00:05:28] Speaker E: Because you said it was Christmas theme, and I then focus on Jesus.
[00:05:33] Speaker B: So this is interesting, Danielle. So you're saying that Christmas. Are you saying that on Christmas you don't focus on Jesus?
[00:05:40] Speaker H: No.
[00:05:41] Speaker E: Like what the category. Like, I didn't like.
[00:05:48] Speaker B: Anybody else kind of realize why they didn't think about Jesus when it came to the category. America.
[00:05:54] Speaker F: Valentine's Day is Jesus birthday, and God's birthday is Christmas. Isn't that true?
[00:06:00] Speaker B: So you bring up some good questions. Because technically, Christmas is not Jesus's birthday.
[00:06:06] Speaker E: What?
[00:06:07] Speaker B: Yeah, it's not. It's not God's birthday either.
Yeah, it's an old, old, old custom of celebrating Jesus's birthday on December 25th. But it's not actually his birthday. But Most people choose December 25th as the day Jesus was born. But it is not the actual date. Okay. Historically, yes.
[00:06:32] Speaker F: Nathan, to be honest, when I was.
[00:06:36] Speaker G: Out, I was thinking of Jesus.
[00:06:38] Speaker B: Yeah. What about him?
That.
[00:06:40] Speaker F: Because.
[00:06:41] Speaker G: Because Roland was playing the game and I. And I was out. I was thinking of Jesus. Because think about it. Who made the world, who made Christmas, who made the holidays?
[00:06:53] Speaker A: Not Jesus.
[00:06:55] Speaker B: So here's the thing about Christmas, right? So we have most people here who celebrate Christmas, but then we have a student here who does not celebrate Christmas. He thinks of Jesus in a different way. So, Ion, do you mind sharing for us? And let's be sure to be sensitive to his belief and if you have any questions, make sure to ask him and be sure to place it on the mic. Okay. So, Ion, take it away. Why doesn't your family celebrate Christmas?
[00:07:22] Speaker A: Because I'm not Christian.
[00:07:23] Speaker B: What does that mean to you? So what are you. What do you identify as religiously?
[00:07:28] Speaker A: Islamic.
[00:07:29] Speaker B: And what does that mean? What does Islam believe about Jesus?
[00:07:34] Speaker A: A prophet.
[00:07:35] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:07:35] Speaker B: So in Islam, Muslims believe that Jesus is a prophet, but in Christianity, we believe Jesus is God. So, Daniela, what's your question? Jesus is not God. Yes, he is.
[00:07:47] Speaker E: It's three in one.
[00:07:48] Speaker G: He's Jesus, son.
[00:07:49] Speaker E: No, he's three in one. No, no, Jesus is three in one. God, the Holy Spirit and Jesus. I mean, God is three in one. And Ion. Why.
Why do you think Jesus is a prophet?
[00:08:08] Speaker A: Because I learned this from my family.
[00:08:10] Speaker B: Prophet is somebody who is.
What is the word? He is.
He or she is told by God to send a message. That is a message from God. So Moses, do you guys know Moses? Everybody knows Moses. Moses was a prophet, and so he led all of his people out of slavery. And so he was considered to be a prophet. So in the way that.
[00:08:39] Speaker G: We call him Musa.
[00:08:41] Speaker B: Very good. Thank you for that Christmas. Right. So do you guys see what's in that word? It's underlined. C, H, R, I, S, T. Yeah. So anytime that you look at that, a lot of people understand that to mean that this is a celebration of Christ, of Jesus Christ. When it comes to Christmas, I. And you don't celebrate it. Right. So I want to know how you feel when you see Christmas decorations. I'm very curious to know, do you feel. How do you feel about it?
[00:09:14] Speaker A: I kind of feel excited by looking at our mom look at one of the decorations.
[00:09:20] Speaker B: Wow. Tell me more about that.
[00:09:22] Speaker A: And I asked my dad to take us, like outside to see the decorations on Christmas.
[00:09:29] Speaker B: So although you're Muslim, you're able to appreciate the decorations.
[00:09:32] Speaker A: Yeah, I can watch it, see all those lights on the houses.
[00:09:38] Speaker B: So Christmas people celebrate it to celebrate Jesus birth. But then some people don't celebrate Jesus at All they're just like, we believe in Santa Claus and gifts and Jesus has nothing to do with it. Is that anybody here?
Oh, it's not. Okay, so where does Santa Claus, what kind of role does Santa Claus play in you celebrating Christmas? Nathan?
[00:09:59] Speaker G: He while you're sleeping on Christmas Eve, he goes in your house through the chimney and gives you gifts under the Christmas tree.
[00:10:11] Speaker B: So I'm curious, what does Santa Claus look like to you?
[00:10:14] Speaker G: He looked like a guy with. In a red. A red hat and a white guy.
[00:10:24] Speaker D: That's it.
[00:10:25] Speaker B: And a white guy. Okay. Daniela, what does Santa Claus look like to you?
[00:10:29] Speaker A: That he looks really, really, really chubby.
[00:10:33] Speaker E: And he wears oversized clothes to keep his chubbiness. And he has a white beard and a Christmas hat.
[00:10:43] Speaker F: Santa Claus looks like a made up character that was made to show show us how. You know how he had like a white beard. You know how Jesus has like a white, like a white dress on or something like that. A white dress, white dress on. It kind of shows out his beard of Santa Costa's beard. And the red outfit shows that shows how the Jesus. How Jesus sacrificed himself and Jew blood and how. I remember seeing a video about how a guy said, jesus, when you go to your heavens of gates, just remember me. And then Jesus said how he will bring him with him.
[00:11:31] Speaker C: Nailee.
[00:11:32] Speaker B: What does Santa Claus look like to you?
[00:11:33] Speaker D: Well, Santa Claus looks like to me like when I go to bed, my family celebrates Christmas and all, but my family doesn't believe in Santa.
So what I really think what Santa Claus is is that he just comes around spreading joy to the world.
And so when he spreads joy around the world, we get like he is good and that his reindeer goes around that to spread people happy and he lets out all his gifts to the kids. But my family doesn't believe in him, but I do. And so what we do for Christmas is like we celebrate and we make our holiday things and we do this special thing that we only do on Christmas Eve tradition that we bake our own brownies by hand.
[00:12:41] Speaker B: That is incredible. Oh my gosh. So thank you guys so much for listening to this.
[00:12:46] Speaker A: Bye.
[00:12:46] Speaker D: I hope you have a great time. See you next time.
[00:12:49] Speaker E: Bye Bye.
[00:12:50] Speaker F: Hope you have a good, good Christmas.
[00:12:52] Speaker E: Bye. Bye. And remember, it's kind of Jesus birthday.
[00:12:56] Speaker G: Bye. Have happy holidays.
[00:12:59] Speaker D: See you on the next.
